Obituary for Harlen Higgins

Harlen Higgins, age 81, died after a short illness at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Forest City, North Carolina. Harlen was the son of the late Herman and Ethel Higgins. He was born on May 1, 1937 in Yancey County, North Carolina. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, of 56 years of marriage. He has one son, John Harlen Higgins, and wife Stephanie Cole Higgins, one grandson, John Cole Higgins, 4 brothers, Forrest Higgins, Frances Higgins, Clint Higgins, William Higgins, 3 sisters, Gail Bailey (deceased), Lillian Womack, Rose Jackson, and several nieces and nephews.

Harlen moved with his family to Rutherford County as a teenager. He grew up on his father’s farm, and later served in the US Navy for a short time. He worked in textiles and manufacturing for many years in Rutherford County. He spent the last 17 years of his working life at Smith’s Drugs of Forest City serving faithfully as he delivered prescriptions to the residents of Forest City and the surrounding areas. He retired from this position just before his 80th birthday in 2017. He will be remembered by his loyalty to his employers and the humble nature in which he performed his duties.

Harlen joined Spindale United Methodist Church shortly after his marriage to Barbara. He was a faithful member and supporter of the church for rest of his life. As such memorials may be made to Spindale United Methodist Church, PO Box 241, Spindale, NC 28160

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Crowes Mortuary of Rutherfordton. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 21 at 12 noon at Spindale United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11am before the service.
