Obituary for Dessie "Granny" Hopper (Elms)

Mattie Jane Dessie Elms Hopper, 96, died Friday, March 24 at her home in Forest City. She was a native of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Lhorne and Candace Elms. A member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, she attended Harmon Street Baptist Church. She retired from Mastercraft Corp. at age 75 after working there 25 years. She was "Granny" to her family and friends and loved the Meals on Wheels volunteers. She was the widow of Claude Hopper. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Judy Day and Faye Greene, one son, Ricky Hopper; also two brothers, Roy and Paul Elms, two sisters, Bessie Mae Elms and Ada Williams, two grandsons, Bud Day and Michael Hopper. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Harris (and the late Dan) of Forest City; son Warren Hopper and Martha of Bostic; and son Eddie Hopper of Seminole, Florida. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Pamela Dutton, Rhonda Bailey, Dan Harris, Jr., David Harris, Lee Hopper-Adams, Scott Hopper and Jay Hopper. Also 10 great-grandchildren, Alex Harris, Lauren Harris, Adam Harris, Taylor Harris, Johanna Hopper, Morgan Hopper, Christy Dutton, Kendall Dutton, Billy Dutton and Evan Hopper. Great-great-grandchildren are Hannah Graham, Kaylee Dutton, Chase Dutton, Conner Dutton, Mason Medlin, Alex Dutton, Emma Dutton and Cora Harris.Visitation will be held Monday March 27, 2017 from 5 – 7 PM at the home of Warren and Martha Hopper of Bostic. There will be no formal funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials go to Meals on Wheels Program, 193 Callahan-Koone Road, Spindale, NC 28160.
